Scott Atkins, Deputy Director of the Truman Bodden Law School, has had an article published in the last week in the peer-reviewed Oxford University Press journal Trusts & Trustees analysing recent cases of trusts of the family home.

Scott said, ‘It’s great to be able to make a small contribution to the understanding of trusts’ law, particularly when English law and Cayman Islands’ law are so closely related. This article directly relates to my teaching at the Law School and I hope it might also be used to inform practitioners in this area in the Islands.’

Mitchell Davies, Director of the Truman Bodden Law School, said, ‘Scott and other colleagues continue to publish in leading law journals in their areas and, along with teaching Caymanian and international students, show just what a world-class academic faculty we have in the Cayman Islands. Mr. Andrew Perkins has contributed a paper entitled ‘Does Holding Offshore Jurisdictions To Higher AML Standards Really Assist In Preventing Money Laundering’ to the Institute Of Advanced Legal Studies Centre For Financial Law conference today via Zoom.

Mr. Perkins paper seeks to contend that when tackling financial crimes such as money laundering and terrorist financing, international regulators are seeking to hold offshore jurisdictions such as the Cayman Islands to higher standards and that this detracts from the pursuit of detecting and prosecuting money launders.

(via CLP) The College of Legal Practice and the Truman Bodden Law School in the Cayman Islands partner to provide SQE preparation courses.

The College of Legal Practice’s virtual preparation courses will be made available to students studying internationally at the Truman Bodden Law School in the Cayman Islands.

The courses developed by the College will assist students in their preparation to seek access to the legal profession of England and Wales through the new Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) regime, the new regulatory route to qualification. From September 2021, the current vocational training regime with entry via the Legal Practice Course (LPC) is starting to be phased out. The College is determined to make this new SQE qualification route available to future solicitors in both the UK and internationally.

The College’s SQE preparation courses guide learners through SQE1 and SQE2 and equips students with the legal skills they need to begin work as a legal professional. The courses prepare students to pass the SQE assessments, whilst developing their skills in identifying, analysing and applying legal principles and developing key transactional skills. The modules are delivered virtually and are flexible and adaptive to the requirements of both students and employers. All elements of the courses are specifically designed for online learning, meaning students can work around their own, personal work and life commitments. With part-time and full-time course options available, students can learn at the pace that suits them. Built into the courses is significant levels of one-to-one supervisory support.
